DHL for tsunami victims

DHL Express and DHL Danzas Air&Ocean, in agreement with Lufthansa Cargo AG, responded to the appeal of the Polish Humanitarian Action, joining the relief effort for tsunami victims. A special transport with humanitarian aid will be sent from Poland by a DHL plane to Frankfurt, and then via the Lufthansa Cargo network to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The transport containing medicines, dressings, water disinfection agents, infusion fluids, and disposable medical equipment departed from Warsaw on January 11 of this year at 8:30 PM from Okęcie Airport.

Since the day, over a week ago, when the tsunami waves struck Asian countries, DHL has been responding to requests from governments, local authorities of disaster-affected countries, and international charity organizations to provide support in delivering humanitarian supplies. So far, the company has provided aid totaling over 350,000 euros. This included charter flights, financial donations, and in-kind gifts for the disaster victims. DHL chartered 7 aircraft to deliver over 126 tons of humanitarian relief products. 5 charter planes flew from Bangkok to Phuket Island, 1 from Singapore to Colombo, and 1 from India to the Andaman Islands.

As official government organizations deploy to the disaster-stricken areas, the demand for private companies like DHL, essential in organizing flights and direct assistance, will decrease. However, the demand for direct financial assistance will grow. DHL employees worldwide, especially in Asia Pacific, have already raised over 42,000 euros. These funds are being paid into a specially established account for this purpose called Earthquake South Asia.

DHL employees in Poland have also actively joined the aid campaign for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. The fundraising campaign will last until January 24, 2005, after which the funds will be handed over to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), with which DHL has been cooperating for a long time and to which it has offered logistical support. The money raised in Poland will be used mainly for tents, blankets, food, and medical assistance.

DHL has also undertaken other forms of activity to help tsunami victims, including mobilizing a disaster response team, providing assistance in transport, distribution, and logistics in disaster-affected areas, purchasing and distributing essential products, making its vehicles available to support the government vehicle fleet in India, and allocating space in sorting facilities in Singapore and Vietnam for gathering products intended for disaster victims.
