GE’s security division has begun real-world testing of a cost-effective container security solution for maritime transport. This solution aims to facilitate the detection of unauthorized intrusion into containers and monitors containers in transit for any unwanted breaches, helping manufacturers, customs authorities, and importers maintain container integrity throughout the entire transport chain.
GE’s solution will enable the creation of global security mechanisms for containerized cargo of all types without disrupting the flow of international trade.
The core of the system is the Container Security Device (CSD), a palm-sized device that can be easily attached without special tools to the door locking bar inside any standard maritime shipping container. The shipper arms the system using a wireless handheld device, assigning it a unique identification code.
CSD automatically transmits information about its current status to fixed terminals or wireless readers in ports, indicating when and where the container was opened. Customs authorities can inspect the cargo at any time using special wireless handheld devices that allow them to arm and disarm the CSD. When the container reaches its destination, the recipient checks the container access history and disarms the CSD before opening the container.
All data is stored and controlled within a secure IT network. Communication between wireless readers and CSD devices is encrypted, as is all transactional data.
The device was developed by the Swedish company All Set Marine Security AB. The CSD has undergone testing by US government and private agencies. The device’s capabilities have been expanded using GE’s access control platform and sensor suite.
