Computer Science and the Global Supply Chain. The Impact of Computer Science on Logistics – Part 16

The Impact of Computer Science on Logistics – Part 16

The global perception of logistics is quite a challenge for all providers of IT tools predestined for applications in logistics. With the gradual yet consistent fading of the significance of borders for the physical flow of materials and the already free flow of information across borders today, it is necessary to speak the same language in logistics so that goods transported in a standard packaging unit can be flawlessly accepted in any organizational system, supported by a more or less sophisticated IT system. The international and cross-industry orchestra (global logistics) must read the same sheet music and play the same pieces, regardless of its current location.

At the end of the series of columns aimed at illustrating the impact of computer science on logistics, I propose that we jointly make a generalized comparison presenting the method and effects of using certain features of a uniform, integrated IT system in global logistics, as well as certain features of the cooperation of many different IT systems for the achievement of the same goal. Each of these solutions has its advantages and disadvantages, each is equal, and the deciding vote on this matter will ultimately belong to the market, which is increasingly being provided with better IT technologies.

This comparison covers the use in global logistics, on the one hand, of a uniform IT system operating with individual data identifiers and, on the other hand, the use of global identification standards in various IT systems.

The implementation of logistics in a globally deployed uniform IT system is based on the following premise:
An order triggers a chain reaction of various operations throughout the integrated IT system supporting the closed supply chain.
