The impact of IT on logistics – part 12
Full efficiency of a WMS IT system is achieved when it is supported by ADC techniques. This sentence, or one very similar, has appeared several times in previous columns. A warehouse equipped with ADC infrastructure then operates like a mechanism in which every element has precisely defined tasks.
The target WMS solution supported by ADC techniques can function both in a standalone (isolated) warehouse and in a warehouse that is part of an open supply chain. In a standalone warehouse, one can of course use local (internal) markings. However, it should be remembered that internal markings can be used solely and exclusively on the section from the entrance gate to the exit gate. In the second case, warehousing must be implemented based on international information standards included in the EAN.UCC system. This postulate is extremely important for the impact of IT on logistics, because it regulates the method of handling the exchange of logistic units in the supply chain.
As I mentioned before, I will not discuss the details related to EAN.UCC standards in these columns, they are available on the website
