The impact of IT on logistics – part 1

The editorial staff of the portal asked me to express my opinion on what impact, in my view, modern information technology has on modern logistics. Such a simply formulated question should imply a simple answer. It could be summed up in one sentence: modern information technology has a major impact on modern logistics. However, this would be a great exaggeration in relation to the expectations not so much of the Editorial Board, but of the esteemed Reader, who, by visiting this page, probably expects something more. Unambiguously describing such an impact is on the one hand not trivial, but on the other hand it seems obvious, which for some time stopped me from taking up the challenge. However, I decided to tackle this issue and present the Reader with my perception of this problem. I do not hide the fact that to a large extent I based it on the reflections that formed the basis of the book published in 2002 entitled “Informatics for Logistics”, but I have expanded them with more concrete observations that are a natural extension of the issues discussed in the book and form the basis for another book currently in preparation related to this subject, this time entitled: “Standards in Warehousing”.

The management of a modern company operating in areas related to logistics cannot be carried out without the support of more or less sophisticated IT technology. It is widely known that company management in itself is worth little if it is not based on real data.

Every company must stand on a solid foundation upon which it bases its operations. Management of this activity should be based on a process-oriented approach to production, relying on a well-designed IT solution, preferably integrated across the entire company. The applied IT solution should provide and utilize a well-designed method of identifying both material items used in manufacturing activities, and trade and logistic units used in distribution activities. All this in order to properly manage the global supply chain.
