Which products must receive the CE mark

The CE symbol is proof that the manufacturer is responsible for the conformity of their product with all provisions of the relevant European Community directives. At the same time, the CE mark is mandatory and must be placed on the product before a product covered by the New Approach directives or other directives requiring its placement is introduced to the market and put into service.

  • Rules for marking with the CE symbol

The CE marking symbolizes the conformity of the product with the relevant Community requirements imposed on the manufacturer. The CE marking placed on the product means that the product complies with all relevant Community provisions and that appropriate conformity assessment procedures have been carried out.

  • Products subject to marking with the CE symbol

The CE mark is mandatory and must be affixed before the product is placed on the market, unless a specific directive states otherwise.

If a product is subject to several directives, each of which requires the placement of the CE symbol, this marking means that the products comply with all requirements of these directives.

A product cannot be marked with the CE symbol if it is not covered by a directive that requires its placement.

  • Marking with the CE
    symbol

The CE mark must be affixed by the manufacturer or an authorized representative established within the territory of the Community.

If the mark must (for various reasons) be enlarged or reduced, the proper proportions must be maintained.

The CE mark placed on the product itself or on the rating plate must be located in a visible place, be legible and indelible. If this is impossible or cannot be guaranteed due to the nature of the product, the CE mark should be placed on the packaging (if any) and in the documents accompanying the product (if the relevant directive requires such documents).

If a notified body is involved in the production control phase, its identification number must be placed after the CE marking. The identification number of the notified body must be placed under the responsibility of that body by the manufacturer or their authorized representative.

  • The CE mark and other
    markings

The CE marking is the only marking symbolizing conformity with all obligations incumbent on the manufacturers of individual products, serving as proof of product conformity with the relevant directives providing for its placement. Member states should refrain from introducing into their legislation any references to conformity markings other than the CE mark that would be contradictory to the tasks of the CE marking.

A product may bear additional markings and signs, if:

  • they fulfill a different function than the CE mark;

  • they are not confused with the CE mark;

  • they do not restrict the legibility and visibility of the CE mark.
