In line with the announcements of the Mayor of Kraków, MPK continues the replacement of its tram fleet. On Monday, 1 December, in the office of Stanisław Kracik, Deputy Mayor of Kraków, representatives of the management board of MPK in Kraków and the manufacturer, PESA Bydgoszcz SA, signed an implementation contract for the delivery of 20 new trams with a length of over 43 metres.
Delivery of the first tram from this order is scheduled for the third quarter of 2028, and the last one for mid-2029. The total value of the contract will amount to PLN 461,100,000 net. The new trams will join the 36 Krakowiak units that have been carrying passengers in Kraków since 2015. The capital of Małopolska will therefore have a total of as many as 56 of the longest trams in Poland.
Each of the new trams will be over 43 metres long, feature a low-floor design, air-conditioning, CCTV, a passenger information system adapted to the needs of blind and visually impaired persons, as well as a platform and dedicated space for a wheelchair. One of these vehicles will also be equipped with special batteries enabling operation without overhead traction power over a distance of approx. 3 km. These will be the first trams of such length with this type of solution in Poland. To ensure the safety of passengers and city residents, each of the 20 units will be fitted with AED equipment.
The new trams will serve those Kraków routes that are the most popular, including, among others, Line 52 connecting Czerwone Maki P+R with the Piastów housing estate in Nowa Huta. They will replace all triple high-floor 105Na sets that are still operating on this route. Kraków’s objective remains unchanged: 100 percent low-floor trams with air-conditioning and modern passenger information systems.
The purchase of 20 new trams was made possible thanks to an investment loan granted to MPK in Kraków by Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, originating from the funds of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan under Investment B3.4.1 “Investments for the Green Transformation of Cities” (KPO), within the project entitled “Purchase of a New Tram Fleet for Kraków as an Element of the Green Transformation Including the Development of Environment-Friendly Public Transport”.
